The hotel was founded on 23 December 1875 and was declared a national monument in 1981. Over the years, many celebrities from the world of arts and letters have stayed at the hotel, including Sarah Bernhardt, Luis Mazzantini, Imperio Argentina, Anna Pavlova, Rubén Darío, Jacinto Benavente and Frei Betto.
